So this turned out to be one of the cooler museums that we have been to in our travels. They allow people into the museum for free, as well as provide free parking in the parking garage that is right beside the museum. A very nice, friendly young lady met us as we came in and gave us an overview of the museum, and we were off and running.
The museum houses multiple items from the life of the Penrose family. They have multiple carriages, buggies, plus a few articles of clothing and such. The other part of the museum is dedicated to the history of the pikes peak hill climb challenge. All of the items are in good repair and well displayed and lit.
They welcome all visitors to take as many photos as they want, and so we totally overdid it on that. I am not aware of whether or not they offer guided tours of the museum, but the self-guided nature of how it is set up works very well to understand the museum.
The portion of the museum that is dedicated to the pikes peak hill climb challenge has multiple cars that have run in the event, timelines that show the fastest times that were achieved during the race, and even the carcass of one car that went over the edge that the driver walked away from. With myself and Brandon going to the actual hundredth running of the race, this portion of the museum was fascinating as we prepare to go on that outing. Friday night before the big race they are having an activity in the Springs where a person can get autographs and see the vehicles that will be in the race this year, exhibitions of motorcycle circus riding as well as food and entertainment.
There is a large amount of history from the previous drivers that have run this race. One of the big race names that seems to have run the mountain multiple times with multiple generations is the Unser family. Mr. Penrose is the gentleman that started the hill climb competition and actually ran in it quite a few times himself. A few of the cars that are on display are cars that he actually drove in the race.
As our videos and slide shows that are on this page will show, there is a lot to be seen and taken in at this museum. If you are ever in the Colorado Springs area, I would definitely recommend that you put this one on your to-do list.
