Custer Park:

After leaving Wind Cave, we headed into Custer State Park. What a beautiful drive! The road is slow with a lot of turns and a couple of one lane bridges. Took some photos on our way through, and once we got down into the valley we came around a corner to a large herd of buffalo in the roadway. We were able to get a lot of photos and videos by the time they cleared the road so that we could proceed on our way. A cool experience for sure. We finished driving through the park and headed for The Needles.

Custer State Park:

Sweet off this morning at 7am headed for Custer State Park. Saw a group of coyotes on our way to the park that we stopped and got pics of. After heading down the wildlife loop, we came across a few different antelope that we were able to get pics of. Got to the Wildlife Visitor Center and got the report that a herd of buffalo had been sighted west of that location. So we headed over to the reported area of the sighting and came around a corner in the road and there they were. Decent herd with upwards of 200 head. Spent time taking photos from all 4 of us and trying to move up to where we could turn around. After about 15 minutes of picture taking, we headed back down the wildlife loop road to the Custer State Park Visitor Center. Went in and checked it out, then headed back to the rigs, stopping for lunch on our way.

From Custer State Park website:

The granite peaks and rolling plains are calling. The clear mountain waters are inviting, and the open ranges are waiting to be discovered. Bring your family to Custer State Park and let yourself run wild.

Encompassing 71,000 acres in the Black Hills, Custer State Park is home to abundant wildlife and adventure; camping, hiking, biking, swimming, fishing, or relaxing, there’s something here for everyone.

Feeding and disturbing park wildlife is against park regulations. While the animals within the park are used to visitors and vehicles, they are still wild animals. Please remain in your vehicle or stay at least 100 yards from bison, elk, and other animals.

Pets must be on a leash no longer than 10 feet and are not allowed in any park buildings or on designated swim beaches. Please clean up after your pet and do not leave it unattended. Service animals are welcome.

Firearms must be unloaded and cased unless during a hunting season with the proper license. Concealed carry is allowed with the appropriate permit.

Custer State Park Visitor Center

The Custer State Park Visitor Center is located at the junction of US Hwy 16A and Wildlife Loop Road. Opened in 2016, the Visitor Center explores an iconic species of the prairie, the bison. Open year-round, the Visitor Center is a great starting point for all of your adventures. Stop in and chat with the knowledgeable staff, or take a break in the 100-seat theater and watch the 20 minute movie that plays every half hour.

Custer State Park Wildlife Station Visitor Center

The Wildlife Station Visitor Center is eight miles south of Hwy 16A on Wildlife Loop Road. The building began as the herdsman’s house and was converted to a visitor center in 1987. In 2017 the building was renovated again to better showcase the rolling hills of the mixed-grass prairie. Take a break from the Wildlife Loop Road to appreciate this unique building.

Custer State Park Bison Center

Located along the Wildlife Loop Road at the Buffalo Corrals, the new Custer State Park Bison Center brings an all-bison experience to the park's scenic drive through the southern prairie of our 71,000 acre park.

The Bison Center was made possible thanks to a $4 million grant from The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust, $500,000 allocated from the South Dakota Legislature, and an additional $500,000 in private donations raised by the South Dakota Parks and Wildlife Foundation. The Bison Center tells the story of Custer State Park’s bison herd and hopes to educate future generations on the importance of bison through engaging and dynamic interpretive displays.

The free roaming herd of nearly 1,400 bison at Custer State Park is one of the world’s largest publicly owned bison herds.
