The Stanley County Jail is one of the oldest buildings in Fort Pierre. It was built for $400 at its present location. At the time, the deputy sheriff, Frank Norman, was called a jailer. Frank and his wife, Jessie, lived in the basement of the courthouse, which was previously the location of the county agents' office. Jessie provided meals to the prisoners at $0.25 a meal. The jail held a number of rowdy and lawbreaking robbers and outlaws. In 1921, a 200 pound mountain lion from Kalispell, Montana escaped while being shipped to an eastern zoo. The mountain lion was re-captured and kept safely in the jail until it could continue its journey eastward.
